Twitch Bans Fake Rockstar Channel Promising Access to GTA 6

The popular US-based streaming platform Twitch recently banned a fake channel called NewsRockstar because the channel was mimicking the popular video game company Rockstar Games and sharing questionable links.

According to reports, this fake channel was banned for pretending to be Rockstar Games and sharing phishing links in an attempt to trick viewers by promising a beta version of Grand Theft Auto or GTA 6.

The fake account also garnered 20,000 viewers. This fake stream was “GTA6 OUT NOW! [BETA] – Early Access Beta Test – Twitch and Steam Exclusive”. This led to thousands of fans tuning in hoping to get into the GTA 6 beta.

StreamerBans on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) revealed that the fake channel’s video was broadcast for more than five hours before it was shut down and later banned.

According to Gadgets Now, “the fake channel’s social media account also revealed that it was an affiliate account. The account also turned out to be originally created in 2013.

This allowed the channel to be transmitted with a confirmation signal. This identifier helped scammers make the channel look as legitimate as possible and bring in a large number of viewers in quick succession, according to the report.

The scam tricked viewers into clicking a link and sharing their Steam account credentials without being noticed. If successful, hackers would gain access to their personal information, including perhaps their banking information.

Meanwhile, a new report recently claimed that streaming giant Netflix is looking to add a Grand Theft Auto title to its lineup. There is no word on the game or its release date, but a GTA release for the Netflix Games platform would likely be a mobile title.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Netflix is planning to license the lucrative GTA franchise for an upcoming release on its Netflix Games service. More detailed information about the contract or the type of game planned for release is not yet available.
